Do we only paint interiors?

No, we also paint exteriors, furniture, decks, fences and pretty much any surface. However, the bulk of our business is residential interior painting because we love the finished product and the satisfaction of improving your home’s aesthetics, comfort and value.

What questions should I ask?

Questions concerning price, quality, scheduling, liability insurance and expectations are excellent starting points. Also, if you need to file a Homeowners Insurance or Property Insurance Claim we can assist you. Generally, here are some basic answers but please follow up for more information. Price: We provide you with a written estimate and that is the price. If you add work you should expect an additional charge. We will fully discuss quality expectations even if you do not ask. Our contract will have a proposed start date, 50% completion date and an estimated Finnish date. They are all subject to small changes. We are fully-insured against accidental damage. Prior to painting we will explain what you should expect to see when we are done.

How Do you go about a painting job?

As professional painters we have seen most every residential situation. Certain style homes present specific challenges with access and application. All in all painting skills apply across the board. It will always involve communicate expectations clearly, prepare the surface properly, protect areas not being painted, use premium compounds, apply paint / top coats in clean, well lit conditions, evaluate the result, problem solve if necessary and leave the area cleaner than when we arrived. Every job is different buy all benefit from this approach.

Who provides the materials / paint?

Almost always we provide all the disposable materials such as paper and plastic coverings, drop cloths, brushes, rollers, tape, sandpaper, restoration compounds. We can provide the paint or you can purchase the primer / paint. You would provide any new hardware for doors, windows, plug and switch covers if you wish to upgrade these items. Our goal is to have no surprises in the end so we always discuss our progress every few days.

What is a good paint to Use?

We prefer to use Ben Moore, Sherwin Williams or California Paint products. Each of these, especially Ben Moore and Sherwin Williams have different lines of quality. We suggest mid to high quality lines only. Choosing the quality of paint is no time to be penny wise pound foolish. We are happy to use any type of paint you would like us to use.

How Firm is our written estimate?

We will hold to our written estimate provided there is a signed contract in place. It only changes if (1) we run into something completely unexpected such as surfaces that can not be painted for some reason or (2) you would like to add additional work once we have begun.

What is in the painting contract?

The painting contract is neither a hidden nor mysterious document. You should read every work and ask any questions. In general, contracts steady business so that each side, the homeowner and the contractor know what they are required to do. Good and fair contracts prevent problems. They also solve conflicts should a future conflict arise. You can review a sample of Brush With Color’s Painting Contract.

What does our insurance liability policy cover?

We carry general liability insurance for our profession. We have not had a claim or accident to date; however, if our ladder came crashing down on your dinning room table you would be covered fully for replacement of the dinning room set. If we spilt oil paint on a valuable rug your would be covered for the cost of the rug. We will provide you a copy of our certificate of insurance before we begin working at your home.

What is a free color consultation?

We have seen that choosing a colors, pallets and color themes can be overwhelming; as part of our initial consultation to provide you with an estimate, we can help choose colors and styles that provide you the outcome you are looking for. Following our in-home visit we will send you and estimate clearly describing all of the work to be performed and material used. Free consults are limited to 45 minutes.

How much money do I need to put down?

We have found that it is best to start with a small deposit then have a second midway payment and the final 1/2 or 1/3 of the contract price paid upon after the final walk through.

Do you cover and move my furnishings?

Generally yes, we will carefully cover your furnishings and move them to a safe area in the house while we work. Don’t expect to see paint drops on your hardware, floors or belongings - We cover everything with plastic or cloth. However, we do not more personal items, wall hangings, small items or curtains. You will need to move all of the smaller items prior to painting or cover them with plastic.

Do we guarantee the quality?

You should expect the finish to last for more than a decade. We guarantee the quality and finish for two years, so long as you use one of the following three brands of paint( Ben Moore, Sherwin Williams or California Paint products). We gaurantee the finish from defects, peeling, discoloration or bubbling. The most common source of paint problems are related to the surface or exposure i.e. sunlight, moisture, settling or contact with paint erroding materials. Please review our Guarantee of Workmanship and Materials. More than likely we will just come out to fix the issue because we want you to recommend us to your family and friends and have us back to paint.

What happens if it takes longer than expected to complete the work ?

We offer an estimate of completion based on the home’s condition and our availability. Every effort is made to stay within the proposed schedule; however, painting takes time and it is usually in the homeowner’s best interest to allow longer drying times rather than rush paint onto surfaces. If time is of the essence and you have a deadline please make sure we know so we can l make every effort to meet your deadline.

What is a final walk through?

After the painters have completed the work one of us will walk through the home with you and go over all the areas we have painted. This is a time you can ask any final questions, comment on the painting job. if you discover areas that you are not satisfied with we will discuss how to quickly resolve the issue. An area might need a simple touch up or the area may be damaged beyond the ability to reasonably repair it. For example if the surface had previously been damaged and we were not expected to repair the area perfectly it will look previously damaged even if newly painted. This is why we discuss final expectations during our first meeting. It is vitally important that we understand each other’s expectations. It is our mission to add you to our list of happy repeat customers.
